What is Behavior Consultation?

Behavior consultation consists of one-to-one sessions with therapists trained to work with adults with developmental disabilities. Eligible persons receive an approved number of Behavior Consultation hours per week from the Developmental Disabilities Program for development of a behavior plan. Implementation strategies and consistent follow-through are maintained to prevent crisis situations. In the event of a crisis, the Behavior Consultant is notified and consults with the individual and his/her team of care providers to rectify the situation.

Who is Eligible?

Behavior consultation is provided to adult recipients of the HCBS/DD Waiver who are currently experiencing, or may be expected to experience, a psychological, behavioral or emotional crisis. Behaviors may include but are not limited to, aggression, impulsivity, an inability to express feelings or problem solve, as well as a wide range of communication deficits and issues relating to social pragmatics.

How Does A Client Benefit?

A Behavior Consultant plays the dual role of therapist and advocate for a client who is experiencing behavioral or emotional difficulties. This service provides intensive collaboration and training for the client as well as staff development and training to providers and team members as related to the needs of a client.
